A school bus rollover on an icy rural highway in Manitoba left several teens with serious injuries on Tuesday morning, according to RCMP. The crash happened around 8:30 a.m. on Highway 10, just south of Mafeking, after the driver reportedly lost control while attempting to pass another vehicle in slippery conditions.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene and found the bus heavily damaged. Four people — three teenagers and one adult — sustained significant but non-life-threatening injuries and were airlifted to hospitals in Winnipeg. Three were taken to the Children’s Hospital and one to the adult emergency department. Other students received treatment at the scene before being transported to Swan Valley Health Centre.
In total, 14 students and the driver were on board. The teens, aged 16 to 18, are from Sapotaweyak Cree First Nation and were on their way to Swan Valley Regional Secondary School and the Northern Lights Institute of Trades and Technology.
Swan Valley School Division superintendent Rob Tomlinson said the community is shaken but grateful there were no fatalities, calling the incident “every parent’s worst nightmare.” A forensic collision investigation is ongoing.
