Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa announced today that the planned Grade 6 education reforms will not take effect this year and have instead been postponed to next year.
Speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing, Dr. Jayatissa explained that the government reached this decision after a series of formal inquiries were conducted into the Grade 6 English module. The investigations, carried out by the CID, the Ministry of Education, and other relevant authorities, revealed several issues that required further review before moving forward with the new curriculum changes.
He added that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has been actively engaged in ongoing discussions with education sector officials to address concerns and ensure that the reforms are introduced properly and without errors.
Despite the delay in the Grade 6 changes, the government confirmed that the Grade 1 education reforms will proceed as planned this year, with no alterations to the rollout timeline.
The postponement, Dr. Jayatissa said, aims to guarantee that the updated Grade 6 curriculum meets the required academic standards and is fully ready for implementation in the next academic year.
