Thousands of Nurses Walk Out in New York City

Around 15,000 nurses at major New York City hospitals walked out on strike Monday after weekend contract negotiations failed. The strike affects Mount Sinai Hospital and its satellite campuses, NewYork-Presbyterian, and Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, with picket lines forming outside each facility.

The New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) said the action is aimed at securing safe staffing, better healthcare benefits, and stronger protections against workplace violence. Hospitals, meanwhile, called the strike disruptive and have hired temporary staff to maintain patient care.

The walkout comes amid a severe flu season, raising concerns about potential procedure cancellations, ambulance diversions, and strain on other city hospitals. Key disagreements include staffing levels, workplace security, and nurses’ workload. The union also seeks limits on hospitals’ use of artificial intelligence in care.

Officials including Gov. Kathy Hochul and NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani urged both sides to reach a fair agreement quickly, praising nurses for their essential role in the city’s healthcare system.

This is the largest nursing strike in NYC since 2023, when a three-day walkout led to a pay increase and staffing improvements at some hospitals. Negotiations continue, but tensions remain high as nurses maintain their demands for better working conditions and patient safety.
