A shipment of 11.484 million meters of fabric from the Chinese Government has arrived in Sri Lanka to support the country’s school uniform program, marking a significant contribution to the education sector.
The official handover ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow, with Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya presiding over the event. The donation underscores the strong ties between Sri Lanka and China, as well as a shared commitment to improving educational access and resources for students.
The Ministry of Education (MOE) confirmed that the fabric will benefit more than 4.4 million students, covering children in government schools as well as those attending Pirivenas. Distribution will begin through zonal education offices starting 19 January, ensuring that students across the country receive uniforms in time for the new term.
Officials highlighted that the contribution will not only meet immediate uniform needs but also support long-term efforts to maintain quality standards in school attire. By providing essential materials, the donation helps reduce the financial burden on families and promotes equal access to education for students from all backgrounds.
The initiative is seen as a step forward in enhancing the learning environment in Sri Lanka, allowing children to attend school with proper uniforms while fostering a sense of unity and discipline. With coordinated efforts between the MOE and local authorities, the nationwide rollout of the uniforms is expected to be smooth and timely, benefiting millions of students and reinforcing the country’s commitment to education development.
