‘We Will Not Ask People to Wait Until 2048,’ Says President AKD

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has assured disaster-affected communities that the government will provide immediate and comprehensive assistance, stressing that people will not be asked to wait decades for relief and recovery.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has pledged that the government will extend every possible form of support to communities affected by the recent disaster, emphasizing that recovery efforts will not be delayed until 2048.

While acknowledging that the lives lost in the disaster can never be replaced, the President stated that the government’s responsibility is to restore and improve the living standards of those affected. He noted that his aim is to ensure that disaster-hit families achieve a quality of life higher than what they had prior to the tragedy.

President Dissanayake made these remarks on January 9 while attending an event in the Vithikuliya area of Kobeigane. The event marked the commencement of construction of new houses and the distribution of compensation to families in the Kurunegala District whose homes were completely destroyed by the disaster.

The initiative is being carried out under the ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka’ programme, which was launched to restore livelihoods in the wake of the disaster. As part of this initiative, the flagship PROJECT 5M programme has begun constructing new houses and providing financial compensation to families whose homes were fully damaged.

The programme focuses on families who have received technical certification confirming that their houses can be safely rebuilt on their original sites. Through these efforts, the government aims to accelerate recovery while ensuring long-term safety and sustainability for affected communities.
