Air India has introduced major updates to its “Paws on Board” policy, making it easier for pet owners to travel with their animals. Flying with pets often involves stress, long separations, and expensive boarding, but the new rules aim to reduce the hassle and make the process more predictable.
Pets Allowed Inside the Cabin
Cats and dogs weighing up to 10 kg with the carrier can now travel inside the economy cabin on select domestic and international flights. Only two pets per flight are permitted, and they must be at least eight weeks old. Pregnant, sedated, or unwell animals will not be accepted.
Faster Booking
The advance request window has been reduced from 72 hours to 48 hours, and approvals are now quicker, though documents will still be verified before confirmation.
Routes Covered
The policy applies to over 80 routes across India, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America.
Seating & Carrier Rules
In-cabin pets will be seated in the last-row aisle seats of economy class. They must stay inside a soft, leak-proof, ventilated carrier (maximum size 17×10×9 inches) placed under the seat.
For Larger Pets
Pets between 10–32 kg will travel as checked baggage in an IATA-approved crate, while animals above 32 kg must be transported through Air India Cargo.
Standardised Charges
In-cabin pets:
- Domestic: ₹7,500
- Short-haul international: $140
- Medium-haul international: $160
Checked pets:
- Domestic: ₹16,000
- International: $350
All fees are non-refundable once confirmed.
How to Book
Pet owners must contact Air India’s support team at least 48 hours before departure and submit vaccination records, fit-to-fly certificates, and required permits.
With simplified steps and clearer guidelines, Air India’s updated policy makes travelling with small pets more convenient than ever.
