Sindhu Advances as Yamaguchi Retires Mid-Match

P.V. Sindhu moved into the semifinals of the Malaysia Open Super 1000 in Kuala Lumpur on Friday (January 9, 2026) after Japan’s Akane Yamaguchi was forced to retire from their quarterfinal clash due to injury. Sindhu claimed the first game 21-11 before Yamaguchi — the three-time world champion and tournament’s third seed — stopped play while sporting a knee brace.

With this result, the world No. 18 extends her head-to-head advantage over the world No. 3 to 15-12. The tournament also marks Sindhu’s comeback to international competition following a lengthy injury break.

In the semifinals, Sindhu will meet the winner of the match between China’s second seed Wang Zhiyi and Indonesia’s sixth seed Putri Kusuma Wardani.

Later today, India’s leading men’s doubles team, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, are set to face Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Shohibul Fikri in their quarterfinal encounter.
