Maruti Dzire Leads India’s Auto Market in 2025

Despite the growing popularity of SUVs in India, the Maruti Dzire emerged as the country’s best-selling car in 2025, proving that compact sedans still hold significant appeal among buyers. Over the calendar year, Maruti dispatched 2.14 lakh units of the Dzire, outpacing rivals like the Hyundai Creta and Tata Nexon, which each recorded 2.01 lakh units. This performance highlights the enduring relevance of value-driven sedans, even in a market increasingly dominated by sport utility vehicles.

Maruti Suzuki maintained a strong presence in the top 10 bestsellers, claiming six spots on the list. Tata followed with two models, while Mahindra and Hyundai contributed one car each. The data underlines the Indian consumer’s clear preference for SUVs, which make up six of the top 10 best-selling vehicles: the Creta, Nexon, Fronx (1.8 lakh units), the Scorpio twins (1.77 lakh units), Brezza (1.75 lakh units), and Punch (1.73 lakh units). Overall, SUVs accounted for a record 55.3 percent of total passenger vehicle sales in 2025.

Hatchbacks, in contrast, are gradually fading from the top ranks, with only the Wagon R (1.94 lakh units) and Swift (1.89 lakh units) featuring among the bestsellers. The Maruti Ertiga stood out as the sole MPV in the list, selling 1.92 lakh units, demonstrating the sustained demand for versatile family vehicles.

The wholesale figures for 2025 reflect a broader trend in India’s automotive market. While SUVs now contribute to more than half of total passenger vehicle volumes, the success of the Dzire underscores that compact sedans continue to attract buyers focused on value, fuel efficiency, and overall cost of ownership. For many consumers, practical, affordable, and reliable sedans remain an essential choice despite the SUV boom.
