Göteborg Film Festival 2026: Nordic Cinema Celebrates Truth in Its 49th Edition

The Göteborg Film Festival 2026, the largest film festival in the Nordic region, returns from January 24 to February 2026, bringing together global filmmakers, powerful storytelling and a timely focus on truth in an era where fact and fiction increasingly blur.

The 49th edition of the Göteborg Film Festival will once again transform the Swedish city of Gothenburg into a vibrant hub of international cinema, welcoming film lovers both in theatres and online across Sweden.

Held annually since its founding in 1979, the festival has grown into the most significant cinematic event in the Nordic region. Over eleven days, audiences will experience approximately 250 films from more than 80 countries, presented through nearly 700 screenings. Directors, actors, producers and cinematographers from around the world are expected to attend, engaging with audiences through screenings, discussions and informal events throughout the city.

The festival will conclude with a prestigious closing gala, where the renowned Dragon Awards will honour outstanding achievements across the festival’s competition categories.

Focus: Truth

The 2026 edition centres on the theme “Focus: Truth”, exploring how truth is represented, distorted, questioned and reconstructed through cinema. At a time when misinformation and blurred realities dominate public discourse, the festival aims to examine the role of film in shaping perception and confronting reality.

Programme and Tickets

The official festival programme will be released on January 7 at 1:00 pm via the Göteborg Film Festival website. The printed programme catalogue will be launched later that day at Auktionsverket Kulturarena and will be available across Gothenburg thereafter.

Ticket sales for members begin on January 9, while general ticket sales open on January 10. Audiences can book tickets and online passes through the festival’s official website. A physical box office will also operate during the opening days of the festival, offering tickets, festival passes and Silver and Gold memberships.

Participating Cinemas and Online Access

Screenings will take place across Gothenburg at venues including Biograf Draken, Biopalatset, Capitol, Bio Roy, Stora Teatern, Aftonstjärnan and Biograf Göta, with selected VR experiences available in Nordstan. Additional screenings will be hosted throughout western Götaland and across Sweden, alongside an online selection curated for nationwide audiences.

Beyond screenings, the festival will host talks, concerts, parties and industry-focused events such as TV Drama Vision and the Nordic Film Market, reinforcing its status as a key meeting point for global film professionals.

With its ambitious programme and timely thematic focus, Göteborg Film Festival 2026 promises to be a powerful celebration of cinema’s ability to question, reflect and reveal truth.
