Historic Mihintale Vihare Structures Threatened by Heavy Rains

Two important structures at the historic Mihintale Viharaya are facing a serious risk of damage following continuous heavy rainfall, the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) has warned.

According to GSMB Director General Mrs. Deepani Weerakoon, inspections carried out by an excavation engineer from the Bureau’s Anuradhapura office revealed that both the ancient Giribanna Stupa and a recently constructed Dharmashala are vulnerable to collapse and ground subsidence.

The Dharmashala, which was built without a proper foundation, has been identified as being in urgent need of structural reinforcement. Engineers have recommended the immediate construction of a side support wall to prevent further deterioration.

Meanwhile, the Giribanna Stupa — a site of immense archaeological and religious significance — could develop cracks or suffer structural weakening if preventive measures are not taken swiftly, Mrs. Weerakoon cautioned.

The GSMB noted that a comprehensive geological assessment of the area will require time. A specialist geologist is expected to conduct a detailed investigation to evaluate the risks and propose long-term conservation and safety measures to protect the sacred site.

Authorities have stressed the importance of urgent intervention to safeguard Mihintale Viharaya, regarded as the cradle of Buddhism in Sri Lanka.
