Global football legend Lionel Messi recently visited Vantara, the wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and conservation centre founded by Anant Ambani in Jamnagar—and the moment quickly became a blend of spirituality, compassion and sport.
Accompanied by Inter Miami teammates Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul, Messi received a warm traditional welcome with folk music, floral greetings and a ceremonial aarti. Dressed in a shawl, tilak and rudraksha malas, the football icon impressed fans with his graceful Indian avatar as he participated in temple rituals and offered prayers for peace and unity.
During the visit, Messi explored Vantara’s state-of-the-art facilities, including care centres for big cats, herbivores and reptiles, a foster unit for orphaned animals, and a multi-speciality wildlife hospital. He was seen feeding giraffes, rhinos and elephants, while observing veterinary and rehabilitation efforts up close.
One of the most heartwarming moments was Messi’s interaction with Maniklal, a rescued elephant calf, during a playful football enrichment session. In a touching tribute, Anant and Radhika Ambani named a lion cub “Lionel” in his honour.
Praising Vantara’s mission, Messi described the centre’s work as “truly beautiful” and expressed deep admiration for its commitment to animal welfare. The visit concluded with traditional rituals symbolising goodwill and new beginnings—leaving fans across the world delighted.
