A Brief History of the Sri Lanka Navy
The Ceylon Naval Volunteer Force (CNVF) was established in 1937.
Following World War II, the CNVF was integrated into the Royal Navy as the Ceylon Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve (CRNVR).
After independence, a core group of 100 officers and sailors formed the foundation for a regular naval force.
The Navy Act was enacted on 9 December 1950, officially creating the Royal Ceylon Navy.
With the 1972 Constitution, the force was renamed the Sri Lanka Navy.
Celebrating 75 years of service, the Sri Lanka Navy continues to play a critical role in national defense, maritime security, and humanitarian operations.
