Northeast Monsoon Gradually Strengthens Across Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is beginning to experience the gradual establishment of the Northeast monsoon, according to the Department of Meteorology. The shift in seasonal wind patterns is bringing widespread rainfall and intermittent thunderstorms across multiple regions of the island.

The Met Department stated that the Northern, North-Central, Eastern, Central, and Uva provinces will receive showers or thundershowers at intervals throughout the day. Some areas in the Northern and Eastern provinces, as well as the Polonnaruwa district, are expected to experience fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 75 mm.

Meanwhile, other regions of the country can expect afternoon showers or thundershowers after 1:00 p.m., with certain locations likely to record rainfall above 50 mm.

Early morning misty conditions are forecast in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces, reducing visibility for commuters.

Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious, particularly regarding strong localized winds, lightning, and heavy downpours associated with monsoon-driven thundershowers. The public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize potential damage during this period of unstable weather.
