Sri Lanka’s Metro Bus Service Set to Redefine Public Transport Experience.

Sri Lanka is preparing to introduce a modern metro bus service as part of a long-term effort to transform the country’s public transport culture, marking a major step toward efficiency, comfort, and improved service quality.

Sri Lanka’s proposed metro bus service is expected to usher in a fresh culture and “new vibe” within the national public transport system, according to Deputy Minister of Transport and Highways Prasanna Gunasena. Speaking in Parliament, he said the initiative would serve as a future model for public transportation across the country.

He noted that the newly established Metro Bus Company, operating under the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB), will function with a distinct identity. This includes a separate recruitment process, its own salary structure, and a unique uniform to match the new service standards.

Transport and Highways Minister Bimal Rathnayake further revealed that the pilot project is scheduled for rollout by July next year, starting with a fleet of 70 buses in Colombo. He added that the recruitment process for the new company is expected to be finalized between March and April of the coming year.

The metro bus initiative is part of a broader move to modernize public transportation and provide passengers with a more efficient, reliable, and comfortable travel experience.
