Russian Spy Ship Accused of Targeting RAF Pilots With Lasers Near UK Waters

The UK government has accused the Russian spy ship Yantar of pointing lasers at RAF pilots monitoring its activity near British waters, marking the first recorded incident of its kind, according to Defence Secretary John Healey.

Healey described the move as “deeply dangerous” and confirmed that the government was taking the development “extremely seriously.” The vessel was reportedly observed north of Scotland and has entered UK waters twice this year.

The defence secretary emphasised that the UK will continue to track the ship closely, adding that “military options” are prepared should the vessel alter its course.

“My message to Russia and to Putin is this: we see you. We know what you’re doing. And if the Yantar travels south this week, we are ready,” Healey said during a press briefing in Downing Street.

Incident Occurred While RAF and Navy Were Tracking the Vessel

The laser incident is believed to have taken place within the past two weeks while the Yantar was being monitored by a Royal Navy frigate and RAF Poseidon P-8 aircraft. Healey has since updated Royal Navy rules of engagement to allow closer tracking when the ship is in broader UK waters.

He noted that any attempt to disrupt or endanger British pilots is “deeply dangerous” and unacceptable.

Russia Denies Intent to Undermine UK Security

The Russian Embassy responded by rejecting claims of hostile intent, stating that Russia has “no interest in British underwater communications.” The statement accused the UK of “militaristic hysteria” and urged London to avoid actions that could escalate tensions across Europe.

Security Concerns Raised by Officials

Labour MP Matt Western, chair of the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy, warned that the incident highlights the “immediate threat” Russia poses to UK security.

Western nations have long suspected that the Yantar, described by Russia as an oceanic research vessel, is involved in mapping undersea cables—critical infrastructure for global communications.

Security experts, including Elisabeth Braw of the Atlantic Council, labelled the use of lasers as “an escalation,” noting that such tactics are designed to impede pilots’ visibility and operations.

Ongoing Defence Discussions and NATO Concerns

The incident comes amid broader concerns about Russian incursions, global instability, and NATO preparedness. A recent parliamentary committee criticised the UK Ministry of Defence for over-reliance on US defence capabilities.

Meanwhile, the UK is negotiating with the EU to participate in a €150bn defence loan programme, though negotiations remain tense over potential entry fees.
