India Celebrates 100 Years of Hockey with Grand Nationwide Events

India is celebrating 100 glorious years of hockey today with nationwide events capturing the sport’s remarkable legacy. As part of the centenary celebrations, over 1,400 matches will be held across 550 districts, uniting players and fans in a grand tribute to India’s national game.

The main event will take place at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium in New Delhi from 8:30 AM, featuring a vibrant lineup of special programmes that showcase Indian hockey’s journey from its golden Olympic past to its modern-day resurgence.

Highlighting Unity and Inclusivity

A special 30-minute exhibition match between the Union Minister’s XI and Hockey India’s Mixed XI (Men & Women) will headline the event, emphasizing gender equality, teamwork, and inclusivity in sports. Esteemed national players from both the men’s and women’s teams will take part, symbolizing the shared spirit that defines Indian hockey.

Honouring Legends and Preserving Legacy

The celebration will also feature a felicitation ceremony honouring hockey legends who have made lasting contributions to the sport. An official commemorative book titled “100 Years of Indian Hockey” will be released, paying tribute to generations of athletes who brought glory to the nation.

A Journey Through Time

Adding to the grandeur, a large-scale photo exhibition will offer visitors a visual journey through India’s century-long hockey history — from its early dominance on the global stage to its continued evolution as a powerhouse in world hockey.

With eight Olympic gold medals and 13 Olympic podium finishes, India stands as the most successful hockey nation in the world, a legacy that continues to inspire future generations.
