Largest Supermoon of 2025 to Illuminate Sri Lankan Skies Tonight

The Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies announced that the biggest and brightest supermoon of the year will be visible tonight, captivating skywatchers across Sri Lanka.

The Arthur C. Clarke Institute for Modern Technologies has confirmed that a spectacular supermoon will grace the skies tonight, appearing 14% larger and 30% brighter than an average full moon.

Supermoons occur when the moon’s elliptical orbit brings it closest to Earth — a point known as perigee. During this event, the moon will be approximately 356,980 kilometres from Earth, making it the largest supermoon of 2025.

Astronomers note that tonight’s phenomenon will not only offer a breathtaking celestial display but may also lead to slightly higher coastal tides, a common effect during supermoons.

Such lunar events take place several times a year when the full or new moon coincides with its closest orbital approach to Earth. Viewers are encouraged to step outside after sunset for the best view, weather permitting, and enjoy the brilliant glow of this natural spectacle.
