Sri Lankan sprint sensation Fathima Shafiya Yamick was welcomed with cheers and celebration in her hometown of Kandy following her remarkable performance at the 2025 South Asian Athletics Championship in Ranchi, India.
The 26-year-old athlete made history by clinching gold medals in the women’s 100m, 200m, and 4×100m relay, setting new championship records in each event. She recorded times of 11.53 seconds in the 100m, 23.58 seconds in the 200m, and led the relay team to a 44.70-second finish, marking one of the most outstanding individual performances by a Sri Lankan athlete in the regional meet’s history.
During the festivities in Kandy, Yamick expressed her gratitude to the local community and made a heartfelt appeal for unity.
“We have no race divisions in our village,” she said. “Muslim, Sinhala, Tamil, Buddhists – we are all united. I grew up with them since the day I was born. Please don’t share posts that suggest otherwise. We have no such issues in our village.”
Her call for harmony and inclusivity was met with strong support from the crowd, highlighting her influence not only as an athlete but also as a community role model.
