Pakistan Seeks Global Partnerships at International Mining Conference in Australia

Pakistan’s Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik has arrived in Sydney, Australia, to attend the International Mining and Resources Conference (IMARC), a major global event bringing together key leaders from the mining industry. The three-day conference, taking place from October 21–23, 2025, aims to foster dialogue, showcase innovation, and promote sustainable development in the global mining sector.

According to state media, Malik will engage in bilateral meetings with participating ministers, senior Australian officials, and industry leaders to discuss cooperation in the exploration of critical minerals, energy transition, and sustainable resource development.

The IMARC conference will host over 500 exhibitors from around the world, featuring the latest in mining technology, machinery, and services driving global innovation and productivity.

Pakistan, endowed with vast reserves of gold, copper, lithium, and other valuable minerals, has been actively seeking international partnerships to strengthen its minerals and energy sectors. The government views the mining industry as a key driver for revitalizing the economy, which has been facing persistent financial challenges and currency instability.

Islamabad’s efforts have already drawn attention from several major economies. In August 2025, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed Washington’s interest in collaborating with Pakistan on critical minerals and hydrocarbons. Earlier in April, Pakistan hosted an International Minerals Summit in Islamabad, attended by representatives from the U.S., Saudi Arabia, China, Turkiye, the U.K., and Azerbaijan, highlighting growing global interest in the country’s resource potential.

Among Pakistan’s key mineral assets is the Reko Diq mine in Balochistan, one of the world’s largest porphyry copper-gold deposits, estimated to contain 5.9 billion tons of ore. However, despite its rich natural wealth, the mining sector currently contributes only 3.2% to Pakistan’s GDP and a mere 0.1% to global exports.

By engaging with international stakeholders at IMARC, Pakistan hopes to unlock its untapped mineral potential, attract foreign direct investment, and position itself as a significant player in the global mining supply chain.
