Chinese President Xi Jinping Strengthens Ties with Sri Lankan PM Harini Amarasuriya During Beijing Meeting

Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya on Tuesday at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, where the two leaders held discussions on advancing bilateral cooperation and global solidarity. The meeting took place during Prime Minister Amarasuriya’s visit to China for the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women.

President Xi emphasized the long-standing friendship between China and Sri Lanka, highlighting that the relationship has been guided by the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence. He described the partnership as a model of mutual respect and win-win cooperation between developing nations.

“China and Sri Lanka are fellow travelers on the path of development and revitalization,” President Xi stated, reaffirming that Sri Lanka continues to hold an important place in China’s neighborhood diplomacy.

The Chinese leader expressed China’s commitment to further strengthening economic collaboration, particularly in the fields of port development, modern agriculture, digital transformation, green technology, and tourism. These efforts will continue under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which aims to boost regional connectivity and sustainable growth.

President Xi also reiterated China’s firm support for Sri Lanka’s sovereignty, independence, and right to pursue a development strategy suited to its national conditions. Additionally, both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in law enforcement and security to combat transnational crimes, including cross-border gambling and online fraud.

The discussions also covered the importance of collaboration within multilateral platforms such as the United Nations to promote an “equal and orderly multipolar world” and a more inclusive form of globalization.

The meeting reaffirmed the shared vision of China and Sri Lanka to deepen mutual trust, advance joint development, and strengthen unity among nations of the Global South.
