Canada Post Union Shifts from Nationwide to Rotating Strikes to Resume Mail Delivery

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) has announced that it will end its countrywide strike and transition to rotating strikes beginning Saturday at 6 a.m. local time, allowing mail and parcel delivery to partially resume across the country.

The decision, revealed on Thursday evening, follows a meeting between union representatives and Joël Lightbound, the federal minister responsible for Canada Post, held on Wednesday night. During the meeting, CUPW voiced concerns over recently announced operational changes aimed at overhauling Canada Post’s service model.

The union said it plans to have a follow-up meeting with the minister’s office next week to continue discussions on the proposed reforms and their impact on workers and postal services.

By shifting to rotating strikes, CUPW aims to maintain pressure on Canada Post management while minimising disruption to Canadians awaiting deliveries — particularly crucial as the holiday shipping season approaches.

The rotating strike approach means that different regions will experience temporary service interruptions on a rolling basis, instead of a complete shutdown nationwide.

CUPW has been pushing back against changes to Canada Post’s mandate, which include plans to modernise operations and introduce new cost-cutting measures that the union fears could affect working conditions and service quality.

The latest development reflects a balancing act between labour action and public service continuity, as both sides prepare for continued negotiations in the coming days.
