World’s tallest bridge opens in China

The world’s tallest bridge opened to traffic on Sunday in Southwest China’s Guizhou province, marking a significant development in the region’s rural infrastructure.

Spanning the Huajiang section of the Beipan River, the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge has a deck 625 meters above the water and a main span of 1,420 meters, making it the longest main span for a bridge in mountainous terrain.

The bridge is a key link in Guizhou’s expressway network, reducing travel time between the two banks from about two hours to roughly two minutes. Its opening on Sunday brought the expressway connecting Liuzhi special district and Anlong county into full operation.

Construction began in 2022. Guizhou’s rugged landscape has necessitated extensive bridge-building to support its road network. According to the provincial transportation department, the province has built and is constructing more than 32,000 bridges, and nearly half of the world’s 100 tallest bridges are located in Guizhou.
