VP Hsiao Welcomes Canadian Security Delegation, Stresses Cooperation on Peace and Technology

Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim reaffirmed Taiwan’s commitment to deepening cooperation with Canada in security and technology while strengthening partnerships to safeguard regional peace and stability.

Hsiao made the remarks on Sept. 22 during a meeting with a Canadian national security delegation at the Presidential Office in Taipei City. The group included Tom Lawson and Wayne Eyre, both former chiefs of defense staff.

Highlighting the close bilateral ties, Hsiao noted that Taiwan and Canada collaborate in areas such as economy, technology, trade, culture, and Indigenous affairs, while also working together to counter gray zone coercion.

She underscored that defense and security have become pressing issues of shared concern in recent years. “Peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait are crucial to global interests,” she said, thanking Canada for reiterating this stance in international forums such as G7 meetings.

The vice president also pointed to growing opportunities for collaboration in emerging defense technologies. She cited the recent memorandum of understanding on a dark vessel detection system, and Canadian firms’ demonstration of anti-drone technologies at the Taipei Aerospace and Defense Technology Exhibition, which concluded on Sept. 20.

Hsiao concluded that Taiwan and Canada share strategic interests in emerging defense innovations and remain committed to working together for regional peace, stability, and security.
