China’s Hand in Sri Lanka’s Highway to Recovery

Sri Lanka has officially resumed construction on the 37km Kadawatha–Mirigama section of the Central Expressway after a three-year pause.

📍 Key details:

Rs. 229.5 billion investment – backed by China’s Exim Bank and local funds

Kadawatha Interchange: entirely funded by Sri Lanka at Rs. 8.6 billion

Preliminary works worth Rs. 7.5 billion already completed

At the inauguration, Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong remarked:

“This is more than a road. It’s a symbol of the enduring friendship between China and Sri Lanka.”

🚀 More than just infrastructure, the project is being framed as both a development boost and a diplomatic milestone, strengthening the evolving Sri Lanka–China partnership.
