Have Sri Lanka found their wildcard for the Asia Cup?

Carrying an air of elegance and unpredictability, dazzling crowds with sheer flair, Sri Lanka may have discovered their batting wildcard ahead of the Asia Cup, which begins on September 10.

Kamil Mishara, recalled to the national squad following his success in domestic cricket, made the most of his chances in Zimbabwe. His cracking half-century in the final T20 guided Sri Lanka to a series win, a crucial boost after the team had been bowled out for just 80 runs in the second game.

While Sri Lanka’s bowling has grown stronger in recent years, thanks to an exciting crop of young fast bowlers, batting has remained inconsistent. The team’s win percentage drops drastically—just 16%—when Pathum Nissanka or Kusal Mendis fail to score runs. This is where Mishara’s return becomes vital.

The former Royal College left-hander looked composed against pace and assured against spin in Zimbabwe. His ability to score freely may give Sri Lanka much-needed depth in the top order. Though tougher challenges await in the Asia Cup against powerhouses like India and Pakistan, Mishara appears to be Sri Lanka’s best option at number three.

Chameera: Sri Lanka’s spearhead again

On the bowling front, Dushmantha Chameera has re-emerged as Sri Lanka’s strike weapon. Once considered sidelined due to injuries and the rise of youngsters like Matheesha Pathirana, Dilshan Madushanka, and Asitha Fernando, Chameera roared back in Zimbabwe, claiming eight wickets in just three matches.

Seen by many as Sri Lanka’s best fast bowler since Lasith Malinga, Chameera brings experience and match-winning quality. Even IPL franchises trusted his ability when national selectors overlooked him. Fit and firing again, his role will be critical if Sri Lanka are to challenge Asia’s best in the upcoming tournament.
