Heriot-Watt University Dubai Expands Campus with New James Watt Building at Knowledge Park

Heriot-Watt University Dubai has marked its 20th anniversary in the UAE with the launch of a new state-of-the-art wing at Dubai Knowledge Park. The James Watt building, spanning 50,000 square feet, is designed to accommodate more than 1,500 students and further strengthens the university’s commitment to world-class British education in the region.

Named after James Watt—the pioneer of the Industrial Revolution and inspiration behind the university’s name—the building reflects Heriot-Watt’s tradition of innovation, research, and impact.

Professor Dame Heather McGregor, Provost and Vice Principal of Heriot-Watt University Dubai, said:

“Since establishing our presence in 2005, we have been committed to advancing academic excellence. The new building is yet another milestone in our mission to nurture the next generation of leaders while offering a holistic student experience.”

The James Watt building features a wide range of modern facilities, including digital learning environments, an active learning room, a wellness room, flexible seminar spaces, and a purpose-built auditorium for up to 200 attendees. Collaborative learning areas such as pod rooms, focus rooms, and a dedicated student hub provide students with versatile spaces for both academic and social engagement.

Sustainability is a key feature of the design, incorporating 23 square meters of green walls, eco-friendly furniture, and strong public transport links.

Over the past two decades, Heriot-Watt University Dubai has become one of the UAE’s leading higher education institutions, recognised for teaching excellence, research performance, and graduate employability. Earlier this year, all its undergraduate and postgraduate programmes achieved Initial Programme Accreditation from the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, solidifying its reputation as a centre of academic excellence.

The expansion underscores Heriot-Watt’s mission to deliver exceptional British-quality education while preparing students for success in a rapidly evolving global economy.
