Canada Post has confirmed that no further bargaining sessions are currently scheduled with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW), as both sides remain locked in a tense standoff over collective agreements.
In a statement on September 2, 2025, Canada Post said it is waiting for the union to bring “workable solutions” that reflect the financial and operational realities of the corporation.
“Canada Post is waiting for CUPW to come back with workable solutions that will get the parties closer to a resolution and end the uncertainty for employees and customers,” the Crown corporation stated.
The company stressed it remains committed to reaching agreements through the bargaining process but warned of an “urgent need” to address its challenges.
CUPW Rejects Company’s Approach
In response, CUPW accused Canada Post of failing to bargain in good faith. The union said management has refused to move beyond its “final offers” from May 28, which workers overwhelmingly rejected in a union-administered vote in July.
CUPW reiterated its call for fair agreements that protect jobs, improve service, and secure the future of Canada’s postal service.
“Instead, Canada Post continues to demand concessions from postal workers while ignoring solutions that would improve service, protect jobs, and secure the future of the postal service for all Canadians,” CUPW said.
Financial Struggles and Ongoing Tensions
Canada Post, which reported a record $407 million loss in Q2 2025, said the current overtime ban imposed by CUPW has had a severe impact, particularly on parcel delivery revenue.
A federal Industrial Inquiry Commission report earlier this year described Canada Post as “effectively insolvent,” recommending reforms such as scaling back daily deliveries in favour of community mailboxes and expanding weekend services.
Although the overtime ban continues, both sides have not ruled out the possibility of a full strike, echoing disruptions seen in late 2024.
For now, the deadlock leaves employees, businesses, and customers in limbo as negotiations remain stalled.
