Sri Lanka Police Marks 159 Years of Service with New Reforms and Technology-Driven Policing

The Sri Lanka Police celebrates its 159th Anniversary today, 3rd September 2025, commemorating the establishment of the force in 1866 when G. W. R. Campbell was appointed as the first Inspector General of Police (IGP). This year’s anniversary holds special significance, as it falls just two weeks after Priyantha Weerasooriya (Attorney-at-Law) assumed duties as the 37th IGP.

With over 86,000 officers across 608 police stations, the Sri Lanka Police continues its mission of upholding the rule of law, combating crime, drug trafficking, and ensuring public peace despite a shortage of 30,000 officers.

🚨 Embracing Technology for Safer Policing

Recent reforms highlight the force’s growing reliance on technology:

Automated Fingerprint Identification System (AFIS) and Automated Mugshot Identification System (AMIS) strengthen criminal detection.

Automated Facial Recognition Systems (AFRS) at Bandaranaike International Airport track and identify suspects in disguise.

CCTV surveillance across Colombo improves traffic management and crime detection.

GO Pay, a digital traffic fine payment system via mobile phones, is already being implemented successfully.

📞 New Services for Public Engagement

To improve community trust and accessibility, the police have introduced:

119 for emergencies, 107 for complaints in Tamil, and 109 for child and women’s protection (with female officers on duty 24/7).

Tell IGP, an online and WhatsApp-based complaint system (071-8598888).

Improved online police clearance services, especially benefiting job seekers and migrant workers.

⚖️ Institutional Reforms & Officer Welfare

The new IGP has initiated awareness programs with the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, streamlined recruitments and promotions, introduced a new salary scale, and taken a strong stance against corruption to restore the honour and pride of the police service.

Honouring Sacrifice

On this milestone anniversary, tribute is paid to all officers who lost their lives in the line of duty, those who retired after distinguished service, and the generations of officers who contributed to maintaining peace and order for over a century and a half.
