Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe is scheduled to appear before the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) today to provide a statement regarding an ongoing probe into the alleged misuse of state funds for an overseas visit.
According to investigative sources, the inquiry revolves around a trip Wickremesinghe undertook to the United Kingdom to attend a university graduation ceremony in London. While the visit has been described as personal, it is alleged that state funds amounting to nearly Rs. 17 million were utilized for travel and related expenses. Reports indicate that around ten individuals accompanied him on the trip.
Wickremesinghe, who received a call from the CID earlier this week, confirmed through his lawyers that he would be present today to cooperate with the investigation.
Once the statement is recorded, the CID is expected to forward the details to the Attorney General’s Department for further consideration.
Meanwhile, speculation was widespread yesterday regarding a possible arrest, but legal sources clarified that Wickremesinghe is more likely to leave with his legal team following the statement.
