BASL Calls for Inclusion of Law in School Curriculum

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) has called on the Government to introduce the subject of Law into the national school curriculum, stressing its importance in fostering civic consciousness and strengthening democratic values.

In a letter addressed to Prime Minister and Minister of Education Harini Amarasuriya, the BASL proposed making Law or a related subject compulsory at the primary level and offering it as an elective subject at the G.C.E. Advanced Level.

The BASL welcomed the Ministry of Education’s ongoing reforms in the education sector, noting that early exposure to legal education would help nurture responsible and informed citizens.

“Many countries around the world have already included Law in their school curricula, identifying it as a vital foundation for civic engagement and democratic participation,” the BASL highlighted.

Further, the association expressed its willingness to extend full support to the Ministry of Education and other relevant authorities in designing and reviewing the proposed curriculum. The BASL assured that the content would be academically rigorous while remaining sensitive to Sri Lanka’s legal and cultural framework.

The letter was signed by BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya and Secretary Chathura Galhena.
