Visitors to Dubai can now take to the water with greater ease, following the launch of a new online licensing system by the Dubai Maritime Authority (DMA), part of the Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation.
The service allows international visitors holding boating licences from countries under the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)—including GCC nations, Europe, and the United States—to apply online for verification. Once approved, they will be issued a Dubai recreational boating licence, enabling them to legally operate vessels such as speedboats and jet skis for leisure, tourism, and sports activities.
The updated system aims to enhance safety standards while offering flexibility to tourists. It coincides with the release of an updated manual governing marine crew licensing in Dubai. The manual sets out medical, professional, and technical requirements for boat operators, along with digital processes for application, renewal, and examination. It also provides a framework to officially recognise licences issued by accredited international maritime authorities.
Sheikh Dr Saeed bin Ahmed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, CEO of the DMA, said the initiative reflects Dubai’s vision of creating “a flexible maritime environment that allows international visitors to enjoy a safe and exceptional boating experience.”
