INDIA Bloc to Announce Vice-Presidential Candidate on Tuesday

The opposition INDIA bloc is set to announce its candidate for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election on Tuesday, following intensive discussions on Monday. Several names are reportedly under consideration, including a senior scientist from Tamil Nadu and a Dalit intellectual with experience in key government positions.

Sources suggest former ISRO scientist Mylswamy Annadurai, proposed by the DMK, is a strong contender. Other potential candidates include Tushar Gandhi, great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and a Dalit intellectual — speculated to be either former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar or ex-Planning Commission chairman Bhalchandra Mungekar. Additionally, an eminent leader from undivided Andhra Pradesh is also being considered.

Annadurai’s nomination is seen as a strategic move to counter the BJP-led NDA, which has already announced Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan, a Tamil Nadu native, as its candidate. Fielding a scientist could also evoke memories of former President APJ Abdul Kalam, reinforcing the opposition’s narrative of merit-based leadership. The TMC is reportedly advocating for a Dalit candidate to ensure representation.

The INDIA bloc convened at the residence of Mallikarjun Kharge, where members exchanged ideas and debated options. Another meeting is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon to finalize the candidate. Kharge reportedly continued discussions with allies late into Monday evening to build consensus.

Although the outcome of the Vice-Presidential election is largely seen as favoring the NDA, the INDIA bloc faced challenges in uniting all member parties. Some allies expressed reservations about contesting, citing potential cross-voting risks and political sensitivities ahead of upcoming state elections. Congress leaders emphasized that candidate selection should consider national perspectives rather than just regional factors, particularly after the BJP’s recent announcement.
