U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Julie Chung, praised the Sri Lankan Government for its constructive and balanced approach to building a fair and reciprocal trade relationship with the United States.
Her remarks came during a courtesy visit hosted by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, where she met with the Chamber’s leadership to explore ways of deepening economic cooperation between the two nations.
Ambassador Chung reaffirmed the U.S. Embassy’s commitment to strengthening ties with the Chamber, highlighting its role as the leading representative of Sri Lanka’s private sector. Discussions centered on expanding trade and investment, particularly leveraging Sri Lanka’s strategic location in South Asia.
She observed that a growing number of U.S. companies are now looking to South Asia for business opportunities, with Sri Lanka emerging as a top destination for investment. To seize this momentum, she encouraged Sri Lanka to enhance trade facilitation, cut non-tariff barriers, and boost overall competitiveness.
Tourism was also identified as a sector with strong growth potential. Both sides agreed that infrastructure development will be crucial in supporting increased tourist arrivals and unlocking wider economic opportunities.
