Two Melbourne families have been rattled by a group of teenagers who allegedly broke into their homes and stole their cars while they slept.
Peter Morgan and his pregnant wife were woken by the sound of their dog barking at a group of men at their home in Maidstone, in the city’s north-west, just after 1am yesterday.
One of the men was seen on their doorbell camera before it is alleged he climbed over a fence and broke in through the back door.
Police said the group took off in Morgan’s Volkswagen with keys and two watches.
But his car returned three hours later when his neighbour became the target.
“I thought they were returning it because they felt bad because my wife is 33 weeks pregnant, but then they used our car and came back to break into the neighbour’s car,” Morgan said.
“My wife’s life and our unborn child’s life (was) at risk here.”
One of the men is accused of jumping over his side fence and accessing the house through a window.
He was caught on camera rummaging through Victor’s front room before they took off with his Honda SUV.
Victor was able to track his car as it was driven from Maribyrnong to a service station in Deer Park where he said his credit card was charged twice.
The father called police as it moved to Inkerman Street in Maidstone, where it’s alleged one of the teenagers tried to steal a Mitsubishi Triton before they were all arrested.
Two of the four teenagers were released by police and the others faced a Magistrate today.
The court heard one of the boys told officers he had taken some heroin and meth. He was bailed but his co-accused will remain behind bars for now.
Both cars have been recovered but are unfit to drive.
Morgan and his wife are now without a family car just weeks before their baby’s due.
“It’s really, really scary, somebody’s got to be held accountable to this because this is not OK,” he said.
