Asia Pacific Lions Rugby Team Launched in Sydney – Set for Historic Match in Sri Lanka 202

Sydney, Australia – A new chapter in global rugby began with the official launch of the Asia Pacific Lions (APL), a bold new initiative backed by DASA Group, aiming to unite elite players from Asia and the Pacific Islands and bring world-class rugby to South Asia.

The launch event, held at Crowne Plaza Darling Harbour in Sydney, was headlined by rugby greats, including Wallabies legend and 1991 World Cup winner David Campese, who will serve as APL’s Director of Rugby. Former Japan international Jamie Henry was named the team’s first-ever captain.

The APL is set to play a landmark fixture in Sri Lanka in 2026 against a top-tier UK Premiership Rugby club, marking a major milestone in bringing high-level rugby to a passionate yet underrepresented region. Talks are underway to sign two more rugby superstars—a former Wallabies icon and a former All Blacks World Cup winner—to further elevate the team’s global profile.

The APL roster will consist of a competitive mix of players from Asia Rugby-affiliated nations and Pacific Island powerhouses, creating a fusion of styles, skills, and cultures.

DASA Group Driving Change

Jazal Marzook, Chairman of DASA Group, emphasized the initiative’s transformative potential:

“We’re not just building a team, we’re building a legacy. APL is about redefining Sri Lanka’s place in the rugby world while empowering talent across Asia. This collaboration will be a game-changer for regional rugby.”

Campese on APL’s Vision

David Campese called the project “brilliant,” saying:

“Rugby is Sri Lanka’s second-biggest sport after cricket. I saw the passion first-hand during my visit. Credit to Saabir and the DASA Group for pushing this vision forward—it’s not only great rugby, it’s great entertainment.”

Henry Ready to Lead

Jamie Henry, the inaugural APL captain, expressed excitement about his leadership role:

“I’m honoured to lead such a pioneering initiative. This is more than rugby—it’s about creating impact across the region.”

Beyond Rugby – A Tourism & Cultural Vision

Russell Arnold, former Sri Lankan cricketer and sports personality, praised the broader economic impact:

“This can change lives. It’s not just sport; it drives tourism, inspires communities, and spreads joy. This is a venture with true depth.”

APL Founding Director Saabir Cader outlined the bold aspirations of the movement:

“Our dream is to create a passionate, loyal rugby fan base like the ‘Barmy Army’ that boosts visibility and tourism for Sri Lanka. If we can capture just 1% of the AU$420 million generated by the British & Irish Lions Tour in Australia, we’re on the right track.”

Cader also acknowledged the support of key international stakeholders including British High Commissioner Andrew Patrick, Australian High Commissioner Paul Stephens, and Asia Rugby President Qais Al-Dhalai, as instrumental to the project’s success.

With elite talent, strong grassroots vision, and powerful international partnerships, the Asia Pacific Lions are poised to reshape the future of rugby in Asia and South Asia.
