Landslide in Uttarakhand, North India Leaves 4 Dead, 50 Missing After Flash Floods

A devastating landslide and flash flood hit the village of Dharali in the Uttarakhand region of northern India on Tuesday, leaving at least four people dead and 50 others missing, according to India Today.

The disaster was triggered by a massive mudslide, which caused a sudden surge of water and debris to sweep through the village, destroying homes and infrastructure.

The Indian Army was swiftly deployed to lead rescue and relief efforts. In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), the Army confirmed that troops had been mobilized and reached the affected area to assess the damage and assist in locating missing individuals.

“A sudden flow of debris and water swept through the settlement,” the Army stated. “Rescue operations are currently underway.”

Television footage from the scene showed powerful floodwaters demolishing homes and washing away roads, underscoring the scale of the devastation.

Pushkar Singh Dhami, the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, confirmed that the disaster was caused by a cloudburst—a sudden, intense rainfall event common in mountainous areas.

“I am in constant contact with senior officials, and the situation is being closely monitored,” Dhami wrote on X.

Uttarakhand, located in the Himalayan foothills, is especially vulnerable to landslides, flash floods, and extreme weather events, particularly during the monsoon season.

As rescue operations continue, authorities have urged nearby residents to remain vigilant and follow official safety instructions. More updates are expected as the situation develops.
