The Sri Lankan government will allocate Rs. 110 million each in 2026 and 2027 to increase salaries of public service officers, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake announced today.
The announcement was made during the 41st Annual Convention of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service Association (SASA) held at Temple Trees on August 5. The event was attended by Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government Dr. Chandana Abayarathna.
President Dissanayake reiterated his government’s commitment to uplifting the status, morale, and efficiency of the public service. The proposed salary hikes are a continuation of the previous budget’s plan to strengthen the public administration system and reward service performance.
In his keynote address, the President stressed that next year’s budget will focus on building a modern and ethical public service, describing the current state as one facing both “physical and spiritual ruin.” He emphasized the importance of a self-reflective approach and called for institutional transformation, including upgrades in physical infrastructure and a shift in workplace culture.
Addressing concerns about ethical decline, President Dissanayake acknowledged that some public servants had begun viewing their roles as purely transactional, but promised decisive action to restore integrity and social responsibility in the sector.
“We are committed to protecting and revitalising the public service,” he said. “As the political authority, we expect dedication, discipline, and professionalism from all public officers.”
The President also pledged continued investment to improve facilities and capabilities across government institutions, affirming that a well-respected and modern public service is essential to national progress.
This year’s SASA convention marks its return after a five-year break, bringing together top administrators from across the country’s public sector.
