Sri Lanka Lion Yevan David roars through Euroformula grid

Sri Lanka’s 18-year-old motor racing superstar Yevan Ranasinghe David has made a powerful impact in the 2025 Euroformula Open season, racing for the well-known European team Motopark.

After rising through the ranks of Formula 4 and Eurocup‑3, Yevan made history as the first Sri Lankan to compete full-time in the Euroformula Open, a championship known for grooming future Formula 1 talent.

Yevan’s debut round at Portimão in Portugal in April was nothing short of spectacular. He began the weekend with a third-place finish in Race 1 after recovering from an early mistake. In Race 2, he showed great confidence by overtaking the leaders and grabbing his first win of the season. Race 3 proved his class again, as he started from fifth on the grid and stormed through the field to take another victory. With two wins and a podium on his debut weekend, Yevan collected 65 points and took an early lead in the championship. His fearless overtaking and aggressive racecraft earned him a nickname from commentators — “The Sri Lanka Lion” — a nod to his fighting spirit on the track.

In the second round at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium, Yevan continued to impress. He secured his first pole position in qualifying, showing pure speed and control. He won Race 1 comfortably, finished fourth in Race 2, and then climbed back to take second place in Race 3 after a tough battle with Poland’s Tymek Kucharczyk. His consistency helped him extend his lead in the standings, reaching 122 points. At this stage, he had marked himself as a serious title contender.

Round three at the Hockenheimring in Germany brought mixed weather and mechanical issues. Yevan’s car suffered a mechanical failure, disrupting his rhythm during the weekend. He finished tenth in Race 1, bounced back with third in Race 2, and then secured a strong win in Race 3. In that final race, he handled a safety car restart with confidence and pulled away from his rivals. With 163 points after three rounds, Yevan maintained a narrow lead in the championship.

The fourth round at the Hungaroring in Hungary proved to be a turning point. Yevan finished second in Race 1, but mechanical troubles struck again in the next two races. He finished twelfth and tenth, as persistent car issues affected his pace and strategy. Although he added some points to his tally, the overall lead slipped away as his closest rivals closed the gap. It was a challenging weekend, marked by technical setbacks and lost opportunities.

In Round five at Circuit Paul Ricard in France, Yevan started strong with second place in Race 1. But difficulties returned in Races 2 and 3, where he struggled with the car’s handling and balance, finishing twelfth and tenth. The weekend saw him drop to second place overall in the championship standings with 213 points, as Kucharczyk surged ahead with 230 points.

Despite the setbacks, Yevan’s strengths have stood out. His racecraft, especially in overtaking and during restarts, has been sharp. He has shown calmness under pressure and a strong fighting spirit.

With key rounds remaining at the Red Bull Ring in Austria on September 7, Barcelona-Catalunya in Spain on September 21, and the season finale in Monza, Italy on October 19, Yevan still has a strong shot at the title.
