Trump Demands Ceasefire Between Thailand and Cambodia, Threatens to Suspend Trade Talks

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has called on Cambodia and Thailand to immediately end escalating violence along their shared border, threatening to block future trade agreements if the conflict continues.

Trump, currently in Scotland on a golfing and trade-related visit, announced via social media on July 26 that he had personally spoken with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai. He stated clearly that no trade deals would move forward without an immediate ceasefire.

“Both parties are looking for an immediate ceasefire and peace,” Trump said, adding that he’s optimistic about future agreements once calm is restored.

The ongoing border violence, the worst in 13 years, has already claimed over 30 lives and displaced more than 130,000 people. Both nations claim self-defense in the skirmishes, with the conflict rooted in long-standing disputes over land and ancient heritage sites.

Key to the tension are territorial claims around the Ta Moan Thom and 11th-century Preah Vihear Hindu temples, sites that have stirred nationalist sentiments and military stand-offs over the years.

The current conflict was reignited following the fatal shooting of a Cambodian soldier in May, which led to a military buildup and political strain—particularly for Thailand’s already fragile coalition government.

Trump also warned of imposing 36% tariffs on both countries if the violence escalates. However, he emphasized that once peace is achieved, he looks forward to finalizing trade deals with both Southeast Asian nations.

“When all is done, and peace is at hand, I look forward to concluding our trading agreements with both!” he said.
