Shani Abeysekara Named as Witness in Ekneligoda Disappearance Trial

The Attorney General’s Department has officially informed the Colombo Trial-at-Bar that Shani Abeysekara, the current Director of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), has been named as a witness in the high-profile case concerning the disappearance of journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda.

The case, which is being heard before Justices Namal Balalle, Mahesh Weeraman, and Sujeewa Nishshanka, relates to the abduction and disappearance of Ekneligoda on January 25, 2010.

The accused include Lieutenant Colonel Shammi Kumara Ratna, the former Commanding Officer of the Giritale Army Camp, along with nine other members of the Military Intelligence Unit. All have been charged in connection with the journalist’s disappearance.

Ekneligoda, a political columnist and cartoonist, went missing just days before the 2010 presidential election. His disappearance has sparked national and international concern over media freedom and enforced disappearances in Sri Lanka.

The inclusion of Shani Abeysekara, a key figure in several high-profile investigations, is expected to add significant weight to the prosecution’s case.

The trial continues at the Colombo Trial-at-Bar.
