While much attention is focused on Tesla’s official entry into the Indian market, another significant electric vehicle is making its debut today. Kia India has launched the Carens Clavis EV, its first seven-seater electric vehicle, offering a more affordable and family-oriented option in the growing Indian EV market.
Tesla, after years of speculation and regulatory negotiations, confirmed that it will begin operations in India in 2025, starting with a showroom in Mumbai. Though initially expected to launch with the Model 3, the company has now decided to introduce the Model Y first. This premium SUV will be available in RWD and AWD variants, with the Long Range AWD version offering 530 km of range on a single charge using a 75 kWh battery pack.
In contrast, Kia’s new offering, the Carens Clavis EV, aims to deliver affordability and practicality. The vehicle shares its platform and design language with its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart but introduces electric mobility to the segment. While full technical specifications have yet to be disclosed, Kia has confirmed that the EV will be available with two battery pack options:
A 51.4 kWh battery offering a 490 km range per charge
A 42 kWh battery, expected to deliver a slightly lower range
Both vehicles represent different segments of the electric vehicle spectrum but underscore the broader surge in EV adoption across India.
Adding to the electric excitement on July 15, Vietnamese automaker VinFast also announced the pre-booking phase for its VF6 and VF7 electric SUVs. These will be the company’s first models to launch in India and are aimed at expanding consumer choice in the EV SUV category.
The simultaneous activity by Tesla, Kia, and VinFast signals a pivotal shift in India’s automotive landscape as global EV manufacturers ramp up their presence to meet growing local demand for sustainable mobility.
