Two individuals lost their lives in a tragic accident when a car travelling on the Mahiyangana–Badulla main road plunged into the Mahaweli Viyana Canal near the 17th post at Mapakadawewa.
The vehicle reportedly veered off the road and overturned into the canal. A coordinated rescue effort was quickly launched by officers from the Mapakadawewa Police Training Academy, Mahiyangana Police, and local residents.
The two victims were retrieved from the submerged car and transported to the Mahiyangana Base Hospital. However, they were pronounced dead on admission, hospital sources confirmed.
Authorities are conducting further investigations to determine the cause of the crash.
