Tech billionaire Elon Musk has officially launched a new political movement called the “America Party”, following weeks of speculation and escalating public criticism of President Donald Trump’s latest tax and spending policies.
Musk made the announcement over the weekend on X, the platform he owns, stating that the new party would offer an alternative to the traditional Republican and Democratic establishments.
The announcement has drawn sharp criticism from Trump, who labeled Musk’s initiative “ridiculous.”
“I think it’s ridiculous to start a third party,” Trump told reporters on Sunday before boarding Air Force One. “It’s always been a two-party system, and I think starting a third party just adds to the confusion.”
Trump and Musk were once considered political allies. Musk previously led the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) under Trump’s leadership, an entity tasked with reducing federal spending.
However, the relationship has soured in recent weeks, particularly after Musk advocated for an Electric Vehicle (EV) Mandate, which Trump vehemently opposed.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump criticized Musk’s recent behavior, writing, “I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a train wreck over the past five weeks.”
Trump accused Musk of trying to force Americans into adopting electric cars prematurely. The president’s recently passed tax and spending bill, signed into law on July 4, eliminated tax breaks for electric vehicles and rejected any form of an EV mandate.
Instead, Trump emphasized consumer choice, stating that Americans could now freely choose between gasoline-powered vehicles, hybrids, or new technologies.
The new legislation includes increased funding for border security, defense, and energy production, while drawing criticism for controversial cuts to healthcare and food-support programs.
Musk’s political shift comes amid his growing disapproval of Trump’s fiscal policies, which he has publicly labeled as unsustainable. With the launch of the America Party, Musk is now positioning himself as a disruptor in the American political arena, challenging the long-standing two-party dominance.
