Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody has assured the public that there is no shortage of fuel in Sri Lanka despite the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. Addressing a media briefing, he warned against spreading false information that could cause unnecessary panic.
The Minister emphasized that fuel bottling and private stockpiling are illegal, and such actions may trigger avoidable supply disruptions. Fuel distributors have already been alerted to monitor such practices.
“We have sufficient fuel stocks for the next 2.5 months, and all procurement agreements are in place to ensure a steady supply until December,” Minister Jayakody said. He confirmed that crude oil for the Sapugaskanda Refinery has already been secured through reliable suppliers outside the conflict zone.
He further clarified that Sri Lanka has avoided oil imports from countries directly affected by the Middle East conflict, sourcing instead from stable, unaffected regions.
Addressing fuel prices, he stated that monthly price adjustments are made based on global oil trends and operational costs. The government remains committed to keeping fuel as affordable as possible, often minimising profit margins to ease the burden on citizens.
