The spotlight shone brightly on Sri Lanka’s Reshan Algama, as he produced a superb 3-under-par round to storm into the top 10 at the Mandiri Ciputra Golfpreneur Junior World Championship, continued at the Damai Indah Golf Course in Jakarta, Indonesia yesterday.
Cricket talent
The 16-year-old Algama fired a brilliant 69, showing calm nerves and technical class to improve by five strokes from his opening day score of 74. His two-day total now puts him tied for 8th place, moving up eight places on the leaderboard and marking one of the best rounds on Day 2.
It was a display of maturity beyond his years. After a modest start to the tournament, Algama bounced back in style, carding three birdies without letting pressure get the better of him. This under-par round is fast becoming a habit for the youngster, who has already made his presence felt in several junior tournaments across Asia.
With just one round remaining, Algama now stands within reach of the top five, and possibly a podium finish. More importantly, a strong final round will help boost his World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) points, adding weight to his growing reputation in international junior golf.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka’s reigning Amateur Champion and top-ranked junior of the country, Jevahn Sathasivam, who is making a return to international competitive golf after quite some time, endured another testing day on the course. Sathasivam posted a six-over-par round of 78, bringing his two-day total to 156, which places him tied for 42nd. Despite the challenges, Sathasivam’s fighting spirit has been admirable. Each overseas appearance remains a valuable step in his career as he looks to rediscover his top form on the international course.
At the top of the leaderboard, Indonesia’s Rayhan Abdul Latief maintained his commanding lead, with a two-day total of 131, while Japan’s S. Suzuki followed closely with 134, setting up an exciting battle for the title in the final round.
