Canada Unveils Tough Immigration and Border Control Bill

Canada has introduced a sweeping new immigration bill that would significantly tighten asylum procedures and bolster border security. Titled the Strong Borders Act, the proposed legislation grants expanded powers to police and border authorities, including enhanced surveillance of the Canada–US border and the ability to open mail during criminal investigations.

Immigration Minister Lena Diab stated the bill aims to combat organized crime and the smuggling of drugs and weapons while restoring trust in Canada’s immigration system.

Key provisions include:

A one-year time limit for filing asylum claims by individuals already in Canada, after which they could face deportation.

A 14-day window for asylum seekers entering from the US under the Safe Third Country Agreement.

The ability for the government to pause immigration application processing in cases involving public health or national security.

Restrictions on large cash transactions, limiting deposits over C$10,000 made by one person into another’s account.

Prime Minister Mark Carney, newly elected in April, has pledged to bring Canada’s immigration numbers to more sustainable levels amid a housing crisis and overloaded public services.

However, critics argue the bill is a threat to civil liberties. Advocacy groups like the Migrant Rights Network warn that the proposed rules could lead to mass deportations and reduced protection for refugees.

The legislation also addresses US concerns over cross-border smuggling, and Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree confirmed it would be discussed with US officials during ongoing trade talks.
