A sweeping polar blast has brought freezing conditions to millions across south-east Australia, delivering the coldest mornings of the year to major cities like Sydney and Brisbane, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
Sydney experienced its coldest day of 2025 yesterday, and the chill continued into this morning, while southern Brisbane suburbs dipped to 11–12°C. But those temperatures pale in comparison to Goulburn, NSW, where the mercury plummeted to -7°C, meteorologist Jonathan How reported.
Despite today’s clear skies and sunshine, more freezing weather is on the horizon. Another cold front is expected over the weekend, bringing rain and further drops in temperature to Adelaide, Melbourne, NSW, and Queensland.
“This is typical for early winter,” How noted, “but still a shock to the system.”
The Bureau expects a warmer-than-average winter overall, but for now, Australians are bracing for another frosty blast as the week ends.
