Elon Musk has announced on X (formerly Twitter) that he’s stepping down from his special government role in the Trump administration, a move confirmed by the White House on Wednesday evening.
“As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President Trump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk posted.
Musk’s departure follows rising tensions, including his criticism of Trump’s new tax plan, which he said would undercut efforts to make government operations more efficient. His Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative aimed at shrinking the federal workforce has already achieved notable cuts, though Musk expressed frustration over resistance from Washington and internal conflicts with cabinet members.
Musk’s exit was described as sudden and without direct communication with Trump, though it had been brewing for weeks amid disagreements over policies and his frustration with the bureaucracy.
Musk had invested heavily in Trump’s reelection campaign but recently signaled he would reduce political contributions. Critics have called for him to refocus on Tesla and SpaceX, while Musk himself hinted at shifting attention back to his private ventures.
