Sri Lanka is increasingly becoming a sought-after location for Indian filmmakers, with leading producers and directors expressing interest in the island’s diverse and scenic filming locations. According to sources, several inquiries have been made with the Sri Lankan government about popular sites for shooting.
While Sri Lanka has previously attracted international film productions, industry insiders note that the country’s full potential has yet to be effectively marketed. This has resulted in producers looking to other destinations in South Asia and Europe. However, recent high-profile projects have brought renewed attention to Sri Lanka’s appeal.
Tollywood star Vijay Deverakonda was recently spotted filming a romantic song, Idhayam Ulle Vaa, at iconic locations such as Galle and Arcade Independence Square. Additionally, nearly half a dozen prominent Tamil cinema actors, including Sivakarthikeyan and Ravi Mohan (formerly Jayam Ravi), are featuring in the upcoming film Parasakthi, with scenes shot at locations like Kollupitiya Railway Station.
In response to this growing interest, the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) has taken proactive steps to position Sri Lanka as a premier destination for Indian film productions. Last year, the SLTPB participated in the 10th edition of the India International Film Tourism Conclave in Mumbai. This major event provided Sri Lanka with a valuable platform to showcase its rich cultural heritage and breathtaking landscapes to the Indian film industry.
