Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney reaffirmed Canada’s unwavering support for Ukraine during his first official meeting with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Saturday in Rome. The meeting took place at Canada’s Official Residence to the Italian Republic during Carney’s visit to attend the inaugural mass of Pope Leo XIV.
In his remarks, Carney emphasized that Canada continues to stand firmly behind Ukraine—not only in its defence but also in Zelenskyy’s leadership and efforts toward peace.
“We admire your commitment to peace, as you’ve demonstrated it again this week,” Carney said, referencing recent peace talks in Turkey. “There can be no peace without Ukraine’s full participation, and you have our absolute support.”
President Zelenskyy thanked Carney and extended a personal invitation to visit Ukraine. Reflecting on the peace process, Zelenskyy noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin was notably absent, suggesting he was “afraid of direct talks.”
Carney expressed optimism about hosting Zelenskyy next month at the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta.
Earlier in the day, Carney met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the historic Chigi Palace, where he received a ceremonial red-carpet welcome and military honours.
This visit marks Carney’s first official foreign trip since winning last month’s federal election. He is accompanied by a delegation of 13 Liberal MPs, including Indigenous leaders such as Assembly of First Nations National Chief Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak and Métis National Council President Victoria Pruden. His presence at the Vatican also marks his first official visit as Prime Minister.
